Dr Amit Varma completed his MBBS from the University of Delhi in 1989. Following this he pursued post graduation from Safdarjung Hospital and completed his Residency, from the State University of New York. After his residency, he went on to pursue a Fellowship in Critical Care Medicine and Neonatology at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and sub specialized in Cardiac Critical Care. This included other fellowships of the Cleveland Clinic and Harvard Medical Center.

On return to India, he joined the Manipal Heart Foundation in Bangalore and subsequently moved on to the Narayana Hrudayalaya as Consultant - in-charge of Critical Care.

He is currently the Chief Operating Officer for Fortis Vasant Kunj. He has also helped setup the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.

Dr Varma heads the clinical care services for Fortis Healthcare Ltd.

He continues to be on Visiting Faculty at the University of Pittsburgh and the Cleveland Clinic. He also functions as a healthcare Consultant to the World Bank and the European Commission with a specific interest in Quality.

He is currently on the editorial board of the Indian Journal of Critical Care Medicine and the Society for Pediatric Research and is a member of the Executive councils of the Pediatric Cardiac Society of India, Society for Critical Care Medicine (USA) and the Asian Pediatric Cardiac Surgery and Cardiology.
