Overview :: Statistics
Global Scenario: -
1.
60% of all deaths are due to chronic diseases
2.
80% of all chronic disease deaths occur in low and middle income countries.   These deaths occur in equal numbers among men and women.
3.
388 000 000 people will die in the next 10 years of chronic disease
4.
Globally, there are more than 1 billion overweight adults, at least 300 million of them obese
5.
The key causes are increased consumption of energy-dense foods high in saturated fats and sugars, and reduced physical activity.
6.
Childhood obesity is already epidemic in some areas and on the rise in others.
7.
An estimated 22 million children under five are estimated to be overweight worldwide.
Each year at least:
4.9 million people die as a result of tobacco use;
2.6 million people die as a result of being overweight or obese;
4.4 million people die as a result of raised total cholesterol levels;
7.1 million people die as a result of raised blood pressure.
Indian Scenario: –
One in every six adolescents in the metros is overweight
Two in five Delhi students have high cholesterol and diabetes is common
One in three teens has bad eyesight
Eighty % obese teens grow into obese adults and are twice as likely to suffer from heart attacks
A WHO backed survey of Delhi public schools revealed that 53% of children between 10 and 14 years and 45 % between 15 and 19 years snack on junk food every day.
In Chennai, 17 % of teenagers between 13 and 18 years are overweight or obese
One in five children has stress related emotional disorders.
Diabetes
There are more than 57.2  million people with diabetes in India  and this increases every year
Every fifth diabetes patient in the world is an Indian (observes Dr. Ramesh Goyal, MD, DM Endocrinology & Diabetology, Apollo Hospitals: 13 Nov 2005 - TIMES NEWS NETWORK.
Diabetes is the biggest cause of kidney failure, the leading cause of blindness in adults of working age and one of the biggest causes of limb amputation
Diabetes significantly increases the risk of coronary heart disease and stroke disease deaths are in people over retirement age
WHO statistics assert that India has the highest number of diabetics in the world.
Heart Disease
Is the most common killer of Indians
Stroke is the single biggest cause of severe disability and the most common cause of death in the country like India
Over two million people die of coronary diseases in India annually
Currently India is home to over 60 million coronary heart patients
Kidney Related Disease
A  silent epidemic of the 21st century
Annually, over 2 lakh people in India are diagnosed with  end stage renal disease (ESRD)
