Senior Consultant, Cardiac Surgeon, Apollo Hospital, New Delhi
Dr. Ganesh K. Mani completed his medical graduation from Maulana Azad Medical College. New Delhi in 1969 and after his residency in surgery he was awarded the Master's degree in Surgery from the same medical college. He worked as Senior Resident in the then Irwin Hospital (currently known as L.N.J.P Hospital). Thereafter, he proceeded to Christian Medical College, Vellore in 1976 for post doctoral training in Cardio-thoracic Surgery under the guidance of Dr. Stanley John. He was awarded M.Ch. (Cardio-thoracic Surgery) in 1979 and the Membership of the National Academy of Medical Sciences in 1980. After a brief stint of at faculty position at the Christian Medical College, he joined the Southern Railway Hospital at Perambur, Tamil Nadu where in ascending positions he continued till 1982.
He was selected by the Australian Government for advanced training in Coronary Artery Bypass Surgery at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital and St. Vincents Hospital in 1983-1984 and for advanced training in Paediatric Cardiac Surgery at Royal Childrcns' Hospital, Melbourne in 1985. He was appointed as Chief Cardiac Surgeon of the Indian Railways, a position he held till the middle of 1989. During this time he was instrumental in getting the hospital the status of "training center of excellence" for Cardiac Surgery of the National Academy of Medical Sciences which has subsequently trained over a dozen cardiac surgeons. During his tenure as Chief Cardiac Surgeon he pioneered innovative operative techniques encompassing paediatric. valvular, coronary and aortic aneurysm operations.
In May 1989, he relocated his practice to Batra Hospital and Medical Research Centre; New Delhi where he established the department and developed it as one of the major cardiac units in Northern India. This center was also recognized for training for the cardiac surgery program of National Academy of Medical Sciences. He received the NATIONAL CITIZENS AWARD in 1992 from the then Vice-President of India. Sh. K.R. Narayanan and the Maulana Azad Medical College ALUMNUS award from Mr. P. K. Dave, Lt. Governor of Delhi. He performed a large number of paediatric. valvular and coronary artery by-pass surgeries till December 1995.
Thereafter, he founded the cardiac surgical department at Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals in early 1996. He went on to receive the NATIONAL EXCELLENCE AWARD in 1996 from Ex-Prime Minister, Mr.Chandra Shekhar. During his tenure at the Apollo Hospitals he pioneered BEATING HEART CORONARY ARTERY BYPASS SURGERY and has performed a large number of paediatric heart surgeries including the news-making coronary artery bypass surgery in a 12 year old (possibly a first in the world for atherolosclerotic coronary artery disease).
Recognising his contributions to cardiac surgery he was awarded the Dr. Pharin CARDIOLOGY EXCELLENCE AWARD in 2000-2001 by the Indian Medical Association. He was nominated as a founder member of Delhi Medical Council and was selected as member of the Executive Committee. He became Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, Society of Thoracic Surgeons USA and member of Indian Association of Cardio-thoracic Surgeons and European Association of Cardio-thoracic Surgeons. He has also been elected VICE PRESIDENT of,the Indian College of Cardiology. He has presented over a hundred papers in national and international conferences.
He was delegated by Apollo Hospitals to found the department of Cardiac Surgery at Saroj Hospital, New Delhi where he performed over a hundred successive and successful cardiac surgeries without any morbidity or mortality. As a token of appreciation, he was nominated as a TRUSTEE of the hospital and has been felicitated for achieving ZERO MORTALITY in a consecutive series of 100 patients. To date, over 11.000 heart surgeries have been performed by him.
